CROSS COUNTRY: The Cougars kick off a highly anticipated 2009 season this weekend as they host the BYU Autumn Classic Saturday morning at the Clarence F. Robison Track.

The event will feature both BYU squads competing at the campus cross country course against UCLA, Idaho State and San Bernardino Valley College. Interspersed between the collegiate competitions will be the top high school cross country programs throughout Utah competing in 5K races at the sophomore, JV, and varsity levels.

"There will once again be some tough competition at this year's race," said men's head coach Ed Eyestone.

Individual awards will be given to the top 30 finishers of each race.

The top three teams from varsity will be given awards along with the top two from the other events.

The 5K race will consist of three laps around the course while the 4 mile run will have four laps. Roughly 70 percent of the course can be seen from the grandstand, which will also provide a view of the finish line.

Both the men's and women's teams hope to use the meet as an opportunity to evaluate their respective rosters and determine traveling teams for future competitions.

"This is a great chance to establish a depth chart for our team and determine who will solidify their spots as leaders of the team," said BYU women's cross country coach Patrick Shane.

Admission to the event is $3 for adults, free for students with an ID card, and children five and under are also free. Any youths (14 and under) wearing their track or cross country uniform will receive free admission. Results from the meet can be viewed on Rocky Mountain RunnerCard.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: After having four road games the BYU Cougars (2 2) will come home to the Smith Fieldhouse Friday and Saturday to host the BYU Nike Classic. Kansas State, Weber State and Cal Poly are the featured teams for the 30th year of the tournament.

"We're very excited to be playing on our home court," said BYU head cheap nike free run coach Shay Goulding. "The last two games were losses partially because of the other team's home court advantage. We've collected ourselves after the last couple games and we're ready to play. We'll be looking for a couple players to step up and lead this team this weekend."

Preseason tournaments hosted by BYU have been a tradition since 1977.

With the exception of two nike free run 3 years (1993 and 1999), the Cougars have hosted at least one tournament each year. It is one of college volleyball's longest running traditions, and although the name of the marquee tournament has evolved over the years from the BYU Preview to the BYU Invitational to the BYU Mizuno Classic to the BYU Molten Classic, to the current BYU Nike Classic, the premise has always been the same to gather top teams from around the country for intense competition.

After No. 17 BYU's shut out performances over No. 20 UConn and No. 9 West Virginia, nike free run 3 Hermann Trophy Candidate Willis and Payne were both chosen from BYU to be honored among 18 other Division I collegiate women's soccer athletes.
