London can only hope Virginia is as patient with him as Tech was with Beamer.

The Cavaliers are 4 7, 1 6 in the ACC, entering Saturday's finale against the Hokies and are not some quick coat of Sherwin Williams project. This is a repair the foundation chore.

Beamer faced a similar challenge when he arrived in 1987, and after a 2 8 1 belly flop in 1992, his six year record was 24 40 2. He's 172 54 since, averaging better than 9.5 wins the last 18 seasons.

London and his staff have made a recruiting splash, most recently with the commitment of Phoebus defensive end Daquan Romero, but don't expect Beamer to be applauding his program's rival.

Asked about Virginia's recruiting success, Beamer steered the focus to the Hokies.

"We're going to do what we do," he said, "and that is, we've spent a long time building relationships with coaches here in the state. I think those guys know that they can trust us and that we will take care of their kids if they come to Virginia Tech and they are going to play at a high level.

"I think we worry about ourselves, how we do business and handle situations. I think t hat that is where our emphasis is, and we will continue to do the things we have done for a number of years here."

As for his personal relationship with London?

"I kind of know him," Beamer said . "I think he is certainly doing a good job and working hard at it. He's got a good staff. They have done a good job."
