Scandal appears no bar for Juventus's partners

MILAN, June 14 (Reuters) Juventus's major partners seem happy to support the nation's premier club even if it suffered the humiliation of relegation from Serie A as a result of a match fixing scandal.

Relegation could hit Juventus' revenues hard if lucrative TV deals were l air max rea ost and sponsorship withdrawn, analysts said.

''The main revenue driver for Juventus is television rights.

If they lost those it would be a massive hit,'' said Harry Philp, managing director of Hermes Sports Partners, a corporate advisory firm for the sports industry.

If Juventus was relegated, ''people will still watch on television but you're not going to get the same viewing levels as you would for Juventus against Lazio'', he added.

Giorgio Brenna, chairman and chief executive for Italy of advertising firm Leo Burnett, agreed.

''The economic impact if they play in Serie B could be huge,'' Brenna said. ''If you took away the television rights, the lack of income from playing in European leagues and sponsorship, it's over 125.8 million dollar a year.'' Juventus made 49 per cent of its revenues of 134.2 million euros from television rights in the first half of the 2005/06 year, with sponsorship accounting for about 20 per cent.

But there are signs that Juventus, Italian champions 29 times, could find life in Serie B not as difficult as investors may have feared.

'THE REAL FAN' Mediaset has a broadcasting deal worth over 218 million euros with Juventus for two seasons from 2007/08 and has said the club's huge fan base meant it would remain a big player whatever division it played in.

Sky, which has satellite rights with Juventus worth at least 94.5 million euros for next season, said it was waiting to see how things developed before taking a decision.

Sponsors have indicated there might not be a drastic drop in revenue for a Serie B Juventus.

''We believe we will continue to work with Juventus,'' said Massimo Giunco, spokesman for Nike E air max 95 dam urope , which has a 12 year, 187 million euro deal with the Turin based team for products carrying its trademark tic which started in 2003.

Germany's Siemens , which is in talks over a contract to provide security and telecommunications at the Delle Alpi stadium which Juventus plans to renovate, said it was discussing sponsorship with the club.

Juventus' sole official sponsor, Libyan state oil firm Tamoil, declined to comment on what would happen if the club were relegated.

Sponsors get huge publicity through Juventus, which has a third of the Italian market in its 14 million domestic fans, and 174 million potential supporters worldwide.

San Gabriel Mountains

The San Gabriels are the imposing mountains that provide the backdrop to the Los Angeles Area. They are a result of the earth's movements via the San Andreas, San Gabriel, Soledad, and Sierra Madre faults and extend from the Cajon Pass in the east to the Ridge Route or Grapevine Canyon area in the west.

Strawberry Peak is one of the highest points in the San Gabriel Mountains rising 6,164 feet and was known for a March 1909 accident when a gas balloon with 6 Pasadena residents on board managed to loft onto Strawberry Peak's crest in the middle of a bad snowstorm. The party was stranded for 72 hours before finally making it to Switzer's Camp, 8 miles away.

However, the most interesting aspect of peak is how it got its name. In the early part of the 20th Century several vacationers at Switzer's Camp made a bet on what the lump that is Strawberry Peak looked like. Someone commented that it looked like a strawberry and won.

The peak remains a favorite among hikers and there's a namesake (Strawberry Meadow) nearby. For those who are lazy, you can drive on Angeles Forest Highway and catch a glimpse of it. It really does look like a strawberry.

No, it's not going to cause dismay and depression if you see or hike the mountain. Mount Disappointment was given this name by the Wheeler Survey (Dr. F. The group had taken all their equipment up to the mountain to use it as a trangulation point because it appeared to be higher at first glance than its neighbor, San Gabriel Peak only to find that it was 150 shorter. Road continues to be rough as Boston Celtics fall to Portland Trail Blazers

PORTLAND, Ore. Wesley Matthews had 24 points, including a clutch 3 pointer with less than a minute to go, and the Portland Trail Blazers snapped their longest losing streak of the season at seven games with a 92 86 win over the Boston Celtics on Sunday night. Hickson's hook shot put the Blazers ahead 86 80, but a pair of reverse layups from Paul Pierce and Brandon Bass pulled the Celtics to 86 82 with 2:54 left.

Kevin Garnett's layup with 1:46 to go tied it, but rookie Damian Lillard answered with his own layup and added a free throw to give Portland back the lead. Matthews, hobbled at t billiga nike free imes with a sore left leg, hit the step back 3 pointer that gave the Blazers the final margin with 53.9 seconds left.

Pierce had 23 points and eight assists for the Celtics, who were playing their third game in four nights.

Boston was coming off a 113 88 victory at Phoenix on Friday night. Jeff Green scored 31 points against the Suns while Kevin Garnett was given the night off to rest, but the veteran forward was back in the starting lineup against the Blazers.

The Blazers saw the return of Matthews, who missed the last two games because of a sore left leg and elbow. But the injury was obviously still bothering him, and he limped badly coming off the court after the third quarter.

Guard Eric Maynor also made his debut for Portland after coming to the team in a deal with Oklahoma City at the trade deadline.

Maynor, in his fourth NBA season, missed most of last season with a knee injury, then got bypassed in the Thunder's rotation by second year guard Reggie Jackson earlier this season. He entered late in the first quarter and even played in tandem at times with rookie Lillard, finishing with two points in 15 minutes.

The Celtics jumped out first and led by as many as seven points early, but Portland pulled in front on Nicolas Batum's 3 pointer, which made it 18 15. Lillard's bank shot and free throw gave the Blazers a 38 27 lead midway through the second.

Courtney Lee hit a 3 pointer and Garnett made a jumper to pull the Celtics to 41 39 with 1:31 left in the first half. Matthews answered with consecutive 3 pointers and the Blazers led 47 42 at the break.

Avery Bradley's fast break dunk put the Celtics back in front 55 54 with 8:32 left in the third quarter, but the Blazers regained the lead and were ahead 71 67 going into the fourth.

Jordan Crawford played 12 minutes but did not score in his second game for the Celtics. He was acquired in a deal with the Washington Wizards at the trade deadline Thursday, so the Celtics were still working him in.

"He's a scorer, but we're going to ask him to do more than that," Boston coach Doc Rivers said.

NOTES: Former Blazers president Larry Miller, now with Nike's Jordan brand, was at the game, as was former Portland Timbers coach John Spencer and Minnesota Lynx forward Maya Moore . The Celtics fell to 9 4 since losing Rajon Rondo to a season ending knee injury.

Oralndo Dr. Phillips safety Matt Milano was not accustomed to sitting on the bench.

He had started every game he ever competed in since playing in the Mighty Might classification for Dr. Phillips' Pop Warner team.

So watching and not playing was difficult.

Milano, then a sophomore, was relegated to backup duty in 2010 and was more or less a bystander for the Panthers' run to the state championship game.

"Thinking about how I used to be playing in every game and then having to watch everbody else play, it was tough, but I got over it," Milano said.

In fairness to Milano, he was backing up nationally ranked safety prospects Ha'Sean Clinton Dix (now at Alabama) and Roderick Ryles (Pittsburgh).

The opportunity to learn from polished veterans gave Milano the chance pick up subtle nuances of the game and to mature physically.

Then as a junior, Milano made up for lost time with a breakout season, leading the Panthers with 123 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, four sacks and three forced fumbles last year.

"I think me having to wait my turn to play really helped me get to where I'm at now," Milano said. "It really showed me little things what to do here and there . sometimes if you jump into it too fast, you really don't know what you're doing."

Milano (6 1, 195) is ranked No. 86 on the Sentinel's 2013 Florida Top 100 and proved last season that he was up to the task of replacing Clinton Dix, Ryles and other talented defenders such as linebacker LaQuentin Smith and cornerback Ryan Luckett.

The Panthers returned just one returning starter from the 2010 defense in linebacker Phillip Amone, who tore his ACL in the regular season.

Once the BYU commit went down, Milano was asked to take over an inexperienced defensive squad.

"Everybody thought we weren't going to be that good," Milano said. "Then Phillip Amone went down and then they were like 'oh, you guys definitely aren't going to be good' and then I just had to pick up the team."

Colleges took note of Milano's stellar 2011 season. His is high on their boards, however, and should garner more attention once combine results from this past weekend are released.

Milano finished with an impressive SPARQ score of 105.51 during Sunday's Nike SPARQ Combine at Winter Garden West Orange High. His score is currently ranked 11th in the nation after four stop son the Nike SPARQ tour.

He ran 4.64 second electronically timed 40 yard dash, showing that he has the speed and athleticism to go with his gaudy statistics.

Big things are expected from Milano in 2012, a air max 2013 dam lso. He will be paring with South Lake safety transfer Marcell Harris, who is regarded as one of the top players in the nation at his position.

The safety duo could rival that of 2010's Clinton Dix and Ryles combo.

That might seem a bit farfetched because Milano is under the radar at this point and news about Harris' February transfer is still making the rounds, so in a way, Milano is still living in the shadows of Clinton Dix and Ryles as if it were 2010 again.

That doesn't bother Milano though. He knows the secret about him will be out eventually and said he and Harris can bring a unique skillset to the Panthers' defense that would compare to what Clinton Dix and Ryles offered.
